ABOUT TENNESSEE SHAKESEPARE COMPANY

Founded in 2008, TSC is the Mid-South’s first professional, classical theatre, education, training, and outreach organization.  TSC produces in all four areas year-round in its own facility at 7950 Trinity Road in Memphis and throughout western Tennessee.  It employs artists from all over North America to perform, teach, train, and tour.  TSC operates in its 18,000 sq/ft facility with an operating budget over one million dollars.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Manager of Tennessee Shakespeare Company’s Education/Outreach Program administers activities that take place for school-age children in traditional settings, including activities that happen during the school day, after school, and in the summer, as well as Outreach programs that serve people of all ages in non-traditional settings (including TSC’s work in Memphis’ Juvenile Justice system and V.A. Hospital).  The position reports to immediate supervisor Sarah Hankins as the Director of Education and Outreach.  The position is responsible for continuing the programmatic success for the balance of current FY27 (through June 30, 2027) and for helping to schedule programs for FY28.  The position communicates with and markets TSC’s programs to area schools, groups, teachers, parents, service organizations, and students. 

Following a FY-end performance review, the contract will continue and enhance terms accordingly.

The position requires strong interpersonal communication and scheduling skills, with experience in not-for-profit and/or for-profit management.  Experience with the Education industry, with Engagement efforts, and with the plays of William Shakespeare and theatre are very helpful and encouraged.

The position, which has an office at TSC, is full-time, working 35 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays, with semi-flexible hours between 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

IDEAL CANDIDATE SKILLS:

The Manager position suits a collaborative self-starter who thrives managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines. Regarding technology, they should feel comfortable working in Word, Excel, Google Suite, and Dropbox. The position requires strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Essential characteristics of successful Managers in the past include patience and a positive outlook with customers, teaching-artists, and school teachers.

AS AN ADMINISTRATOR, THE MANAGER:

• Recruits for and sells education programming, including the Macbeth Initiative, the Romeo and Juliet Project, Feast of Crispian-South, Poetic Justice, Playshops, Camps, adult classes, and student matinees;
• Communicates with school representatives and community members regarding contracts, schedules, billing, tour management, and curriculum;
• Executes contracts, paperwork, and schedules for these programs;
• Recruits and trains teaching-artists for our programs, including submitting timesheets.
• Facilitates and staffs our Feast of Crispian-South and Juvenile Justice programs;
• Collects data for grant reporting, including administering surveys for each program;
• Ideally, contributes to the grant-writing process.

AS A TEACHER, THE MANAGER:

• Teaches in all of our programs, as assigned, according to skill-set;
• Will become proficient in programming in order to teach incoming teaching-artists and apprentices;
• Must be flexible and have the ability to adjust existing curricula to school needs; 
• Has familiarity with and/or enthusiasm for Shakespeare’s plays and creative writing;
• Has theatre practitioner skills that might include movement, stage combat, and curriculum development;
• Has experience with or interest in trauma-informed teaching techniques preferred;
• Should have a passion for teaching youth of all ages;
• Might be able to teach our apprentice company, based on skills and experience.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

• Full-time salary for current FY27 will be based on an annual/12-month salary of $36,400: within a range of $700.00 per week;
• Employment includes 5 paid Personal Days, plus most major holidays, with supervisor’s approval (not annually rolled over) for FY27 ending on June 30, 2027;
• Following the standard three-month trial period, Employee will be eligible for TSC’s health/dental insurance coverage with premium paid by TSC;
• To reiterate, following a performance review prior to the end of FY27, the contract beginning July 1, 2027, would be renegotiated and enhanced commensurate with review results;
• Outgoing Manager will provide-person training in October.
