“Thou and I are too wise to woo peaceably”
As popular then as it is now. The merry war between Benedick and Beatrice is sophisticated, smart, yet undercut by their inability to declare their love for one another in prose. While in verse, the younger Hero and Claudio explore more uncertain terrain in Shakespeare’s first characterization of a triangle of deception centered upon unfaithfulness.
The comedy also features the famous Watch, captained by the malapropping Dogberry. If this play is not the missing Love’s Labor’s Won, it likely falls neatly between the popular creations of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night in Shakespeare’s writing career.
