“I do begin to perceive that I am made an ass.”
The story goes that Queen Elizabeth desired to see Shakespeare’s famous fat knight in love and that he then wrote the play in a fortnight for a celebration. Falstaff, an invention of Shakespeare’s in his earlier Henry IV plays, may well, along with Rosalind, Hamlet, and Lear, outlive our own civilization. They have become universal archetypes.
Here, though, Shakespeare creates his most modern and accessible comedy with the quipping fat archetype buried in the dirty clothes of a laundry basket and unceremoniously dumped into the Thames, quite possibly making the play our first situation comedy.
Filled with a broad range of broad characters, Merry Wives pleases everyone in a wacky night of theatre.
