“This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.”
Inflammatory, popular, given to censorship, yet containing some of the most beautiful passages in the canon, Shakespeare’s tragedy depicts King Richard II relinquishing his crown to Bolingbroke, who becomes King Henry IV (a scene initially omitted on stage for roughly ten years for fear it might prompt rebellion).
The two Henry IV plays would follow Richard II and then conclude with Henry V. These four plays are referred to as Shakespeare’s second tetralogy. They are, in fact, a prequel to the first tetralogy (the Henry VI plays, plus Richard III). Richard II marks the beginning of the Wars of the Roses between the Houses of York and Lancaster.
Is Richard a tragic king or an incompetent leader?
